Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients — Complete Guide

What is Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5?

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5.0 — officially named Return of the Ancients — launched on May 29, 2026 and stands as one of the largest updates in PoE2 history. It introduced the Runes of Aldur league mechanic, a massive Atlas overhaul with 30+ new endgame maps, three fully structured endgame storylines, two new Ascendancy classes, and dozens of new skills and balance changes across every class.

This patch is also the final major content update before PoE2's full 1.0 launch, expected in late 2026. Whether you are returning after Early Access or starting fresh for Runes of Aldur, understanding what 0.5 changed is the difference between a smooth league start and weeks of confusion in the new Atlas.

Runes of Aldur — New League Mechanic

The centerpiece of 0.5.0 is Runes of Aldur — a crafting-focused league built around Runeforging and Expedition-style remnant discovery. Players uncover Remnants across maps and use Runic Recipes to craft powerful runes that enchant equipment with modifiers unavailable through standard crafting.

Key features

  • Runeforging: craft runes using Verisium Remnants and apply them to gear for powerful, build-defining modifiers
  • Genesis Tree: a new crafting system using Hiveblood and Wombgifts earned from Breach encounters — think of it as a parallel progression tree for item enhancement
  • Upgrade Uniques: lower-level Unique items can now be upgraded into stronger endgame variants, giving early uniques long-term value
  • Runic Ward: a new defensive mechanic tied to rune investment on your gear
  • Masters of the Atlas: new NPCs that apply special modifiers to your maps per zone, adding structured objectives to Atlas progression

Runeforging rewards players who map consistently and collect remnants — it is not a one-session mechanic. Plan your Atlas routes around zones where your chosen Master is active for maximum efficiency. Crafting often means spending Divine Orbs on gear — compare prices at rank1gear.com if you prefer buying over farming.

Three New Endgame Storylines

Patch 0.5 adds three major endgame narrative arcs, each with its own mechanic, rewards, and pinnacle encounter. All three tie into Atlas progression and offer distinct loot pools.

Delirium — The Trickster Returns

The Strange Voice has been amplified and the ancient Trickster god has broken free, infecting Wraeclast with pure madness. Players shatter massive Delirium mirrors and fight enemies in distorted realities where damage and rewards scale with how deep you push.

Completing the Delirium storyline unlocks a pinnacle encounter with the Trickster in his own dimension. Rewards include Distilled Emotions for jewel fine-tuning and new Unique items that interact with the Delirium mechanic directly.

Breach — Keepers of the Flame

Breach mechanics received a full overhaul with the Keepers of the Flame content. Players seek out massive celestial Hiveborn hives and challenge Breachlords directly in their otherworldly domains instead of only running timed Breach encounters in maps.

The Genesis Tree introduces a fresh layer of item crafting tied to Breach progression — Hiveblood and Wombgifts drop from Breach content and feed the tree, creating a long-term crafting goal parallel to Runeforging.

Ritual — Wildwood & Bodach

The Ritual of the Nameless is a series of high-level battles tied to map progression. The culmination is a final ritual in the Wildwood where players face Bodach — the new pinnacle boss of the update and the physical embodiment of darkness itself. Bodach requires Tier 16 map readiness and represents the hardest single encounter added in 0.5.

New Bosses

Patch 0.5 introduces four significant boss encounters, each gating different reward pools:

  • Bodach: pinnacle boss of the Ritual storyline — physical embodiment of darkness, requires Tier 16 map readiness
  • The Trickster: Delirium pinnacle boss encountered after completing mirror shard collection across the Delirium arc
  • Tasgul, Swallower of Light: new Breach boss tied to the Keepers of the Flame progression
  • Tor Gul, the Defiler: new endgame boss with its own loot table and Atlas unlock requirements

Each boss has structured unlock requirements — rushing to Bodach before your build is ready wastes time. Most players progress Delirium and Breach first for gear upgrades, then push Ritual for the Bodach fight.

Atlas Changes

The 0.5.0 update significantly overhauls the Atlas of Worlds:

  • 30+ new endgame maps to explore, each with distinct layouts and monster packs
  • New storylines with structured objectives replacing the old passive Atlas grind
  • Search bar for the Atlas map — finally find specific zones without scrolling
  • In-game trade site access directly from item hover — price-check without alt-tabbing
  • In-house build guide tool — creators can provide Passive Tree pathing choices directly in-game

The Atlas is no longer a passive bonus board — it is an active progression system with story beats, Masters, and zone-specific modifiers. Treat Atlas completion as a league goal, not a side activity.
