PoE2 Swords Are Coming: Duelist Revealed at Gamescom 2026
Path of Exile 2 has spent two years in early access without a single sword. That changes soon. At Gamescom Opening Night Live on August 25, 2026, Grinding Gear Games officially revealed the Duelist — PoE2's first sword-and-shield class — alongside the 1.0 release date of December 11, 2026. On top of the official trailer, show-floor leaks from attendees surfaced a lot more detail than GGG put in the announcement itself, and it's worth sorting out what's confirmed from what's still a rumor before it gets mangled further online.
The image up top is one of the more eye-catching shots making the rounds from the show: an oversized, clearly non-standard sword that's almost certainly a unique — the character wielding it looks like it walked out of an anime cutscene. Whatever GGG is doing with sword itemization, they're not being subtle about it.
What's Officially Confirmed
Start with the hard facts, straight from GGG's own announcement: Path of Exile 2 exits early access on December 11, 2026, moves to free-to-play, and ships "story-complete" — meaning the two remaining campaign acts arrive with it. The game is also coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, not just PC. The Duelist was described officially as PoE2's "first sword-wielding class," a "master of sword and shield" offering "fast, aggressive and adaptable melee combat." Backstory-wise, the character was raised in the slums and trained for the Grand Arena, driven by revenge. GGG also opened pre-registration for cosmetic rewards (including a minipet) tied to a 5-million-signup milestone, and teased more reveals for the second Gamescom show day, August 27.
Swords: A Brand New Weapon Type
This is arguably the bigger news for build theorycrafters: swords have never existed as their own weapon category in PoE2 before now. This is a genuinely new item class, with its own base types and affix pool, not a reskin of an existing weapon. They're shaping up as a hybrid Strength/Dexterity weapon, scaling damage off raw power and speed/accuracy at the same time. Based on what's been shown, expect both one-handed variants (lighter, faster) and two-handed greatswords (bigger hits, slower swings), with the Duelist apparently built to feel at home dual-wielding, running sword-and-shield, or going two-handed.
What the Show-Floor Leaks Revealed
The official trailer is one thing, but attendees recording gameplay on the show floor — footage that circulated partly through the "PoE News" account — showed a lot more: swords being tested in maps and against bosses, new coliseum-style encounters against fresh enemy types (something demogorgon-like, flame-spewing hounds), and a heavily combo-driven fighting style for the Duelist built around long attack chains rather than isolated skill presses.
One important caveat: these were show-floor demo builds, which are typically pre-tuned and often noticeably harder or differently balanced than what ships at launch. Impressions from Gamescom footage aren't a reliable preview of how swords will actually feel in the 1.0 release.
Skills Shown in the Reveal
The gameplay footage showed a cluster of sword skills in action: Lacerate, Eviscerate, Bladestorm, Cyclone, Perforate, and Lightning Cleave. Several of these are familiar names to anyone who played the original Path of Exile — Lacerate, Eviscerate, Bladestorm, Perforate, and Cyclone all existed there in some form, mostly on Duelist, Gladiator, and Champion builds, so there's a real chance PoE2's versions play similarly to what veterans remember. Lightning Cleave doesn't match any PoE1 skill name, which suggests it's new to the series rather than a returning gem.
Cyclone's Rework Comes With a Catch
One of the most iconic skills from the original game is getting a sword-focused overhaul. According to the leaks, the new Cyclone runs on mana cost rather than a charge system, and it can absorb elemental ground effects it passes through — chilled ground, for example — and apply that debuff to whatever it hits, similar to how Twister currently behaves.
There's a restriction attached that's likely to annoy a chunk of the community if it survives to release: Cyclone appears to require dual-wielded swords or a two-handed sword, which seemingly locks out shield/buckler setups and Giant's Blood-style builds (wielding a two-handed weapon one-handed). Expect this to be one of the more requested changes if it makes it into 1.0 as-is.
Blood and Sand: Not the Auras You Remember
PoE1 veterans know Blood and Sand as spirit-cost auras you toggle between. In PoE2, based on translated hands-on impressions from German coverage, these look built directly into having a sword equipped rather than existing as separate auras: Blood Stance triggers blood-wave effects, Sand Stance triggers sand-disc effects during the first seconds of a Cyclone channel.
The translated developer hint points to a control scheme built around it: middle-mouse to parry, right-mouse to hold Blood Stance, left-mouse to unleash a blood wave, with many other sword skills gaining bonus effects while in Blood Stance. Sand Stance seems to work on a similar structure but leans toward charging up one big hit rather than parrying.
Geonora: A Guaranteed Unique Sword
One name floating around the coverage is Geonora, apparently a guaranteed unique sword with its own signature ability. We couldn't find any official GGG material or credible reporting confirming what that ability actually does — this appears to be a very fresh, not-yet-documented leak. Take the name as confirmed and the mechanics as unconfirmed until GGG or a verified datamine says otherwise; we'll update this once real details surface instead of guessing at numbers that might be wrong.
When You'll Actually Get to Play Swords
Bad news for anyone hoping to try this early: swords are not coming in the upcoming 0.5.5 patch, despite some community hope that they'd land ahead of full release. They're locked to the 1.0 launch on December 11, 2026 — a little over three months out from the Gamescom reveal.
Our Take: Great in Campaign, Risky in Endgame
This combo-heavy, parry-and-charge design echoes what GGG did with the Huntress at launch — a class that split opinion hard. The core tension is the same: this style of play shines in the campaign and against specific bosses, where reading attack patterns and timing inputs actually matters. It's a tougher sell in typical PoE2 endgame mapping, where the screen fills with enemies and a well-built character usually deletes everything before a combo chain could ever finish. That's a real design problem for GGG to solve — make swords feel mechanically satisfying without making them dead weight for endgame farming.
Three and a half months isn't long if you're planning to level a Duelist from day one of 1.0 — and if you'd rather skip the leveling grind and jump straight into an endgame-ready sword build, that's exactly what we help with at rank1gear.
